Will writing

My husband and I both have wills but want to change a couple of things but the solicitor wants to charge us a small fortune of £45 each to do this. You can buy a 'will' kit and do it yourself, so could we not just re-write the whole thing ourselves and re-sign it with with two witnesses or do we have to do it through a legal document that you buy?
I just think that surely if it is written, dated and signed that it should stand?

I know times are tight but £90 is hardly a small fortune!!!

YOU can make an amendment to a will ( known as a codicil ) but in most situations it is as easy to just make a new one.

By all means go for the DIY approach but IF you do something wrong it could cost you a hell of a lot more than £90.

    I would spend the £90.00.
If nothing else the solicitor will have professional liability insurance if anything does go wrong.

If the changes are very simple, you could rewrite the will yourselves. Make sure you're confident that the signing and witnessing are done correctly and that your added bits are unambiguous.

If you're not confident and the wills are matching ones, you could always get a solicitor to redo one of the wills and then use that as a template to rewrite the other one.

Are you or your husband in a union? I have just been to update my will (moved house) and because I'm in Unite union it was free. It might be worth joining if you haven't already.

Actually Stephenni £90 is a small fortune to me and my husband as his hours have been cut to 30 and mine to less than 20 per week so by our standards at the moment it is a small fortune.
I think that we will re-write them and then get them checked out by a solicitor.
We aren't in a union but thank you for that suggestion.
