Making number cakes...

Hi everyone, Im not really a cake maker as you will tell by my question :rotfl:

When making a number cake like 50 how to you make the numbers? I have been looking for number moulds but the only ones I have found are only 2 inches.

Im not making one at the moment but just curious

  • You can buy large number pans, but they can be expensive. I make large tray cakes and cut them, and make cakes for the house or freeze the leftovers. :)

oh yeah I could probably manage that, cause the icing would cover all the slips of the knife :rotfl:

I have to give it a go, just got to wait for a birthday to come up and suprise someone

Do you use that ready rolled icing? :D

Just saw that link you added!!!!!!!

Would be cheaper to order the cake... sod paying all that, your cardboard idea sounds perfect :D
  • Do you have any kitchenware/cake decorating type shops, or multi-craft shops near you? There are a couple of places in my (very small) town which hire out number cake tins for very reasonable rates - ours charge a refundable deposit per tin, plus a flat rate hire of around £2 for 48 hours.
  • I tend to do buttercream, depends who I am making it for, I would buy ready made but I would just roll it myself. Buttercream/frosting is much more forgiving though ;)

Our local balloon, card, celebration shop rents out various fancy cake tins including large numbers for about £2. As well as a local shop that specialises in cake decorating stuff, I have know idea how much they charge though. It might be worth asking friends, family, colleagues as somebody may have some they are willing to lend.

  • I had never thought about renting the tins, that's a really good idea. I have a couple of good cake tins, including a fabulous teddy bear one which I adore, but I am afraid I would never lend those out to friends or family :o
