Present for new born.....

Options
It's the first time a friend has given birth and I have no idea what to get when I visit the family.....

Any idea? Any bargain out there for that sort of things?

Oh, it's a baby girl.

Try asking friend what she would really like so there are no duplicates.
Some ideas would be baby toiletries in a changing bag- changing mat for nappy changes.
Pretty outfit in second size i.e 3-6 months as first size are grown out of so quickly.
    Baby photo album.

:) I got a lovely Photo frame when I finished work to have my youngest. I haven't got a clue where they got it from, but it has little windows for New Born, 1 mth, 2 mths etc up to 1 year old.
I'm sure if you do a search you could find something like that.

Guess the 'sensible' thing would be a few things from the baby toiletries dept in Boots - use your Advantage card.

Thats if you're only looking to spend a few £$£$ as a gift.

Otherwise, if they were close friends/family, I'd say a premium bond - but you have to spend £100 these days, it seems!!

Clothes for later months usually go down quite well (with parents anyway, baba won't really care!). As Elona mentioned the really tiny clothes get grown out of v.quickly - so something really pretty or practical for the summer or next autumn might be good.

I would hesitate about buying toiletries...don't want to put a dampener on this idea but think it needs a bit of precaution. I noticed a thread elsewhere in this website about alternatives to baby products. Lots of people have mentioned how delicate a baby's skin is and these baby products aren't really needed and are a bit of a rip off anyway! If your friend's baby has delicate skin then these products mightn't do her many favours.

    a birth sampler?

A lovely pattern on a theme relevant to you/baby/family with the names, dob, and weight

A friend of mine designs and makes these for a living and I got a lovely sampler for £25. You should be able to find some around the same price and it's a really personal gift

    It went down really well

How is your friend doing for cash? If they are tight (as we were when I had my first) then consider practical things - we were given nappies by one friend and I really appreciated that - we already had so much clothes (hand me downs from friends etc) that nappies were really useful.

Also useful are things like vests and sleepsuits and bibs and socks - things that are a bit less 'cute' but very useful.
  • Our local Boots had loads of Baby Organics stuff half price in the sale with various sets incorporating organic toiletries with other things like teddies or towels. Gap baby stuff is gorgeous and they usually always have a sale rail. Gymboree used to do lovely cotton blankets (mine still use them as 'security' blankets years later).

How about a baby book if they don't already have one or something like a Royal Doulton money box which will be around far longer than an outfit. Start the college fund early with a Post Office baby bond (used to be £25, not sure if they still are).

Or why not buy the mother a pampering kit... the baby gets enough anyway! :D
If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...
  • When we had our first, the thing we really needed were new born clothes - everyone says 'I bought the next size as I thought you'd have loads of new born'. But we didn't, so we now have hundreds of outfits that fit now (Sophie is 5 months), but we had to go and buy lots more newborn ourselves.

If you want something unusual, have a look at Magic Custard. I'll say no more... ;) Needless to say, it's as good as it sounds.

    Cheers,
