I got a new large slow cooker from Argos and I have just put it on for the 1st time. Popped it on high to start off, just looked at it after 10 mins at there is a little bit of smoke coming out between the pot and the main part and it smells like burner  Shoud I turn it off and return it or is it normal for a new slow cooker?

Neither of mine have ever done this
To be on the safe side i would unplug it and empty it, give it a quick wash and take it back.

The smoking has stopped
could it have just been dust or something?? 0 -

Better that than burning the kitchen to the ground? The smoking has stopped
could it have just been dust or something??
Did you just use it "out of the box" or did you wash the crock and wipe down the base unit first?

just found this:
Holy smoke
Problem: The slow cooker smokes when you plug it in and turn it on.
Reasons:- Manufacturing oil on the heating element or metal housing.
- Spilled food on the heating element or metal housing.
- Manufacturing oils used in production to protect metal components may cause slight smoking and/or a burning smell the first few times you use your slow cooker. The problem will dissipate after a couple of uses.

I cleaned the crock but didn't touch the base unit0 -

There may well be some dust from the cardboard lurking which caused the smoking or it could be the reason that you found above in the instructions.
If you do decide to try it then i would keep a close eye on it and not go out of the house and leave it. Better safe than sorry.
Hope that it all turns out well and you enjoy your dinner
