How long/tall would GRASS grow in 1 year? if Uncut ?
If grass is UNCUT with a lawn mower, for a whole year, how tall will it grow within that year, approximatley??
there is a patch on the garden which is hard to get to, and too much hassle, and the fence near there is low, so residents can see over it.
So we thought not to cut the grass on that area, to make it looking more 'natural grown'.
so if the grass (normal lawn grass) is not cut in that area for a year,
a) what could be the typical height of the grass in that year ?
(eg, 1 foot? 2 foot? etc..)
Depending if we get a good rain season now-april, and september-november)

Well after a while it would start to fall over on itself, wouldn't it?;)
So you'd have a green area about 6 to 12" high.
Of course it will have the stalky grass heads sticking out of it too, so not going to be pretty.
Can you not use a strimmer to keep it cut back to a reasonable length?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

You could sow some wild flowers in to the area then it would not look so bad as the colours would be what is seen rather than the uncut nature of the area, you would need to cut the grass quite short first and remove the cuttings to give the seeds a chance to germinate, spiking the area with a fork would help as well.
Another idea would be to plant spring and summer flowering bulbs in the area to give a succession of flowers theough the year.0 -
The problem is not the first year (I love the look of grass just before we cut for hay) its when the die back starts if not cut, then it looks worse and worse....lumpy yellowy brown awith a struggling green base. And before it comes into seed it looks not natural, just unkempt. Taking of the turf (which is not a terrible job) and sowing a wildflower mix seems a better solution.0

I second the wildflower idea. Or do what we did and get some chickens and let them range for 6 months. Our wild bit of weedy heaven at the side of the house has literally been blitzed. Ready to plant in summer hurrah.
Seriously clear and plant up as a flower bed?

We moved into our house in September, it has a little front lawn that's open plan with next door's. Both were looking a bit overgrown and then the neighbour cut his. We still don't have a lawnmower or strimmer or anything so we still haven't cut ours. When next door first did theirs it made us look like the chavs of the street in comparison but now, 4-5 months later they look pretty similar.
Don't know if that helps...0 -
