Some advice regarding splitting up

You could do all of this without a solicitor, but I wouldn't advise it.
However, there are many things you can do to keep your costs down. The main one is don't get your solicitor to do something you can do yourself.
Try to sort out in advance how you want to settle. If you can do the negotiations between yourselves, you will save a lot of money.
You do not have to pay his legal fees, he will be expected to pay his own. Just because he tells you something is so, doesn't mean it is. Equally, don't be taken in by the line "my solicitor says so". You'd be surprised how many people interpret what they are told in a way that suits them. Just as many people simply lie to their partners about the legal advice they have been given to try to intimidate them into signing things without proper advice.
Crazychick - your mum's scenario makes no sense. She may not have paid utility bills, but she made her own contribution to the household. That should have counted on her side.0 -
Hi Bossyboots - thats what we thought, (ref mum) but according to the solicitor, cos there was no proof ie Direct debit or giro slip payment of mortgage utility bills etc - its didnt go in her favour - rubbish I no. Personally I think she been dwindled out of a lot more than what she was rightfully entitled to.
