can they be resold? are they of any value?
also when removing old tiles is a lot of mess left on the walls, and how best is it to remove it before putting the new ones on

It's extremely unlikely they will be worth anything and if they were you shouldn't be removing them. Given that this is a bathroom and presumably the place isn't listed then they are worthless.
To clear the old stuff off the wall I suggest you use a proper scraper like :

I would use an SDS drill, but that's because I've got one for various reasons.A house isn't a home without a cat.
