Shirley Goode

I know that some of you remember Shirley Goode's programmes and books with affection. She was one of the first people on TV to show how to save money by cooking from scratch, grow your own etc. I have just discovered her 'blog' in which she talks about her life, recipes etc. Thought that some of you might be interested.

Thank you! I have some of her dogeared cookbooks and love them to bits. I have saved the blog onto my favourites so will keep up with it. I always remember making her elderflower cordial.....yum.....

  • Oh Wow, thanks for this - I used to love the Goode Kitchen and always watched it - in fact her deep fried potato peelings have long been a favourite of mine! I wonder how old she is now?

    I really enjoyed reading this.

Her recipe for cheese and chicken pancakes is so popular that I have to make it as a special celebration dish on birthdays etc.
As we have six or seven people at the meal and they prefer 3 pancakes each - a total of 21 pancakes takes some time.;)

Thank you for that-I've just added her to my favourite list. I used to love watching her on TV and I think she occasionally wrote for a little freezer magazine that I used to buy in the days when I bought magazines!
  • I think that she is really great - her paupers pottage (made from veg peelings) used to be a great favourite of ours. She encouraged you to cost out each recipe and I had labels on my jars for years saying things like Plain Flour less than 1p per ounce. I think I have all of her books and they are very dog eared and splashed. Long may she continue.

I still use her idea of 4 way split for food and grocery shopping- groceries, meat/fish, dairy, veg. Works fine for me, and it relies on you menu planning, which is good OS.

I had her books years ago, then had a declutter and got rid of them. Came on this site and decided I simply had to have the books, so bought them off Amazon! Not very money saving am I?
