  • Sounds like someone with little or no knowledge trying it on! It would be very hard to set up a box to shock any non-owner, and I think it would also be illegal!

  • i had this with a microwave, if you sold it by auction they can only return it on your say so and no you dont have to include any of the postage cost, if sold by buy it now you do as its covered by the distance selling regs. the microwave only sold for £15 but postage both ways would have cost the buyer £40, when he realised it would cost him more too send it back he didnt bother. and i think he was trying it on anyway as ild had it on and it was fine he claimed it stoped working after a week. i phoned ebay asking what to do and that is the advise they gave me - but beware of bad feedback

Not entirely correct. If an item is faulty then any seller must do a refund once item is sent back. The seller will also have to refund the original payment in full including the postage element, and also for damaged or broken items a good seller will refund the return postage as well.

I thought ebay did not have a rule on this but left it to the seller to offer or not as the case may be.

As a business seller you are obliged to offer a full cash refund including the original postage and packaging costs if the buyer has cancelled the purchase within 7 working days after they’ve received the item.

In general, the seller is obliged to pay for the return shipping unless you’ve specifically provided, within your returns policy, that you require the buyer to pay for it.

It is up to sellers to have a refund policy for 'perfect goods but for damaged or faulty items buyers have a right to a return regardless of seller being a business or not. If this was not the case why would anyone ever buy anything from a private seller knwoing they were stuck with whatever rubbish the seller sent them?

As for the return postage there is nothing at all on ebay or paypal that can force even a business seller to repay this, although of course most of us will if itme is not as described or faulty. However buyers can always try small claims if they feel it is worth it.

Ebay cannot however enforce their statement that sellers must refund return costs all they can do is have the original payment returned.

As returns must be accepted for faulty goods any business seller who doesnt accept perfect goods back is IMO asking for trouble. If a buyer knows they'r e not going to be able to return their item, which the seller can then resell perfect, it "could" end up getting damaged and a return then compulsory
  • Sorry to get this old thread back, but I was looking for advice on a similar thing.

I sold a Virgin media router on ebay which was sealed inside the box.

The buyer has messaged saying "
I received this item earlier today.... when plugging it in, it will not turn om (no lights) totally dead, there is a high pitch squeal & humming coming from the plug/power adapter... :(
I know what i'm doing, I'm an IT manager....

Pleas provide return / refund details."

I emailed them back saying I'd give a refund if they sent back everything back as they received it.

I got it back today (standard parcels), but am unsure if it is the same one I sent. There are no noises from the adapter, infact the end that plugs into the router is damaged (half the metal round the edge is missing), it does still plug in and work but a New unit would not have had this.

Also it Does turn on and the lights come on as in the manual.
I'm also unsure if there are and wires missing.

I now realise I should have opened and inspected it first, and will do if I sell anything else that is sealed.

I feel I should say something to the buyer, but I can't prove anything, and may risk a neg.

Is there any point reporting the buyer.. will ebay do anything?
Or should I just say I havent received it back?
