Just bought 2 identical Acer netbooks. I got the feeling when I was setting them up that one was marginally faster than the other.

I've just checked the scores on each....one states

Primary Hard Disk: Disk data transfer rate - 5.5

The other states 5.3

Why different scores if the disks are the same?

I've also just put a 2GB stick of ram in in place of the 1GB but the Memory operations per second rating has stayed the same. I would have thought it would have increased?

(I ran the assessment again after putting the ram in.)

Have you checked that the disks are actually the same?

And more memory doesn't make it faster!

Transfer rates can differ depending on which part of the disc is being tested

Take a look in device manager, and compare the driver types and versions for the storage controllers

    Identical.

However, under Disk drives...one has Toshiba MK1655GSX and the other (faster one) has WDC WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0 so it would appear it's not the same disks after all.

Thanks for the help in understanding.

Just upgraded the ram from 1gb to 2 gb on one of the netbooks and the desktop performance for windows aero has dropped from 2 to 1. Any ideas why that would have happened?

Edit: Never mind, I ran the assessment again and it's jumped up to 2.2 now.

Out of curiosity I put the 2 HDs into,

    http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd_list.php

The Toshiba scores 335, (higher better) ranked 1296 (lower better).
The WD scores 374, ranked 1082.

So the WD is quicker in tests, but probably difficult to really notice in day to day use.

    Must get out more. :o
    Move along, nothing to see.
