Can i cope with applying for probate on my own?

    Sorry you had to go through this - it is such a shock to see a letter addressed to a deceased person as we had when the gas co reverted to my deceased relative's name as account holder 6 or so months after the name had changed to mine - they blamed a computer back up and apologised but it still stung
    You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

    That is actually the legal position, until the court appointed person with letters of administration, tells them who the new account holder is [assuming we are not in Scotland] unless it is already a joint account.

    Many organisations will settle for "The personal representative of XYZ dec'd" and wait for evidence of grant of probate or letters of administration - the latter being more common than the former.

    Personally, as someone who has been an executor several times, I am amazed how often the front line clerks have no training in "bereavement" situations. Not even to the stage of knowing they might need to transfer the call/letter to someone with "bereavement" training. After all about 2,000 people die every working day of the year.
