Where can I get cheap jam jars?

Inspired by folks on this forum I am making hampers for christmas this year. I'm pretty much sorted except that I am making lemon curd to go in the hampers and need about 10 jars to put it in. I've looked at e-bay etc but with postage they're pretty pricey! I have considerd buying a few jars of tesco value jam (which is about 30 something p a jar), chucking away the contents and using those but it seems a dreadful waste. Has anyone got any ideas?

  • You could try asking on your local Freecycle group or your neighbours/family. My Mum has kindly saved me some but she knows she's going to get at least one back filled with something nice. ;)
  • It is worth trying your local freecycle as chocmonster suggested, I was donated several jars in the summer for jam.

I do have a few people saving jars for me, but I still managed to run out today so I ended up buying the value beetroot at 20p for my chutneys.

Have you got any little independant hardware/kitchen type shops around?

They're often little Aladdins caves - mine has 2lb jars for £1.20, so the smaller ones should be under a pound.

Although, the Tesco idea is the cheapest - is there not a way you can use the contents - either in baking you can store/freeze, or even as another part of the hampers?

Lakeland sell plain jars fairly cheaply if you have a local store £4.50 for 12 x 8oz, £4.99 for 12 x 1lb - their preserving jars are quite a bit more expensive, but gorgeous!

They also sell them online at www.lakelandlimited.co.uk but the postage hikes the price up.

M&S have jars of beetroot on 3 for 2,well they had them on fri 11th anyway and are 55p each,so thats 3 for £1.10.Thaught it might be quicker to use up the beetroot than it would with jam.

ask around your friends as well as Freecycle - my friend just raided our recycling bin for a load of jars before they go off for recycling.
  • put a cardboard box near glassrecycling point with a sign asking for jars, -usually gets a good response from people who visit recycling points.my friend got 26 jars in just over a couple of hours doing this.

Somewhere (possibly on Ols Style board) asked this question and the suggestion was to buy jars of cheap jam/beetroot whatever and use the empty jar.

I think the freestyle idea is great though.
