Still getting a lot of cold calls despite being on the preference service. Last one was Talk Talk part of the Pipex group of which I am a member. Suppose they can do this?

Any tips for stopping them?

Difficult to get number of course.

Most calls are Indian based, this sounded similar.

You can't stop the ones from abroad but if you tell the company (from the UK) to supress your number, then they have to do it or the company could be heavily fined.
(was told that when I worked on an outbound sales campaign)

I think there is a way to block calls from abroad, although this might be an inconvenience on occasions.

Even in the UK it is difficult to complain unless you know exactly who is calling and what their number is. Obviously they will suppress it and hang up the moment they suspect you are not a genuine customer. The TPS requires a form to be filled in with all the details.

Don't think you can use TPS to stop calls if you are a customer - have to "beg" the Company direct!!

TPS has a complaint service - but all the nuisance calls I get withold their numbers so it is useless.
3 'charity' calls in the last 4 days, all of whom pretend never to have heard of TPS!

Which, of course, demonstrates another flaw in TPS - it is designed to stop cold sales calls, not surveys or charity donation requests.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

TPS has no jurisdiction over calls from abroad unless it is made on behalf of a UK based company. The UK based companies that use this method have many ways of legally circumventing these rules, though.

If you have ticked (or not ticked, whichever applies) the relevant box(es) on deals on the internet or in other advertisements, even with UK based companies, to tell them that you do not want to receive "information" from them or their asssociates in the future, then they are entitled to cold-call you by phone. In these cases you need to deal directly with the company initiating the call.

Never fill your telephone number in on application or sales forms on the internet. If filling in the box is obligatory to complete the form just enter 0123456789 or some other possibe, but made up, number.
  • and other companies (talktalk springs to mind) do NOT allow you to even opt-out if you make a broadband enquiry

    and I quote

"Please be aware that if you use the speed checker, TalkTalk will call you to discuss your broadband requirements."

If you have a relationship with the company, TPS won't come into it. If however you have opted-out and they persist, then thats a breach of data protection.
  • I got a call from an international number yesterday, dont know what it was about, he started saying something, I politely said, no thanks I am not interested.

He continued talking, so I just set the phone down (didnt hang up) and continued on with what I was doing. If they think they can waste my time, I will waste theirs

And i know exactly why I am getting all these calls at the minute, I stupidly put my number into one of those insurance comparison sites.

Shame we couldn't find the private phone number of the owners of these organisations, we could then kill two birds with one stone!

Another trick is for the company to claim they are performing a survey on the way to the sales pitch. TPS just say, we can't take action against surveys.
