Doncaster - Oxford

Heyy, on the 7th jan i will be traveling from doncaster to oxford. I need to catch the train that arrives there for 11:40 (departing from doncaster at 08:51)

I have a young person rail card and i am not sure what time i will be returning (thus advanced tickets not really do able) :(

is there any cheaper way compared to the £91.75 i keep getting :(

Thanks :(

well 7th jan has come and gone im afraid.. If you mean feb then you are really leaving it late

Single Don - Oxford no changes - £45.55 with railcard

1915 return ox to don no changes - £20.80
    1936 2 changes -£23.10
    2101 2 changes - £20.45

so any of those back will reduce that cost to around 66 quid

You don't need to buy any advance tickets for this journey.
Buy on the day and split as follows.

All prices are with 16-25 railcard discount (except those marked with *, see below)

    Doncaster-Sheffield £6.40 Anytime Day Return*
Sheffield-Derby £8.80 Off Peak Day Return*
    Derby-Birmingham £12 Anytime Day Return#
    Birmingham-Banbury £10.90 Off Peak Return
Banbury-Oxford £3.50 Off Peak Day Return

Total £41.60 (A SAVING OF £50.15 FOR A WALK ON TICKET FOR THE SAME TRAINS!!!!!!!!)

*=price without railcard due to being below minimum fare level
#=minimum fare with railcard so full discount not available before 10am

    Restrictions

    Donc-Sheff - No restrictions
    Sheff-Derby - valid after 0900, return valid after 0900
    Derby-Birmingham - No restriction
    Birmingham-Banbury - valid after 0930, return valid after 0930
Banbury-Oxford - valid after 0845, no return restriction

These fares are based on you travelling on the 0851 Doncaster-Oxford and this service calls at the split points, any return trains would have to also call at these split points.

The reason your orginal fare was so expensive £91.75 is that your journey starts in Peak times. ie before 09:30. Martin Lewis' cheap ticket guide trick 3 explains how to get around this, basically that's what pmm1981 has done, your only paying peak rates for the necessary peak part of the journey, the larger remainder of the journey is off peak and that part is now been charged at off peak rates. Also as your returning the same day, your using some Day return which have less validity which makes them cheaper than a standard Off Peak Return.

As to places to where to split your tickets, Martin Lewis' cheap ticket guide trick 2 explains all that quite well.

In fact the only thing Martin's guide doesn't explain is Routing tricks and Break of Journey tricks, if you want to know about these tricks then RailUK forum is the place to look them up.

I've known about splitting journeys via Birmingham for a long time. (ie Sheff-Birmingham off peak return £37.80, if returning the same day its Sheff-Derby £8.80, Derby-Birmingham £13.70, thus total is £22.50, saving £15.30 straight away and all trains call at Derby).
I'm from S. Yorks too and work on the railway (i was asked to split like this by a passenger), i have found that any journey heading south west is a lot cheaper by splitting especially day returns, if heading through Birmingham a day return will always be cheaper bt doing Sheff-Derby, Derby-Birmingham. If going further a field i just try the stopping points. For yours a Birmingham-Banbury was better than Birmingham-Leamington Spa plus no restrictions on the ticket quoted instead of afternoon peak restrictions.
Cross Country fares as a rule are expensive and lack day returns, splitting ino shorter journeys mean day returns are usually available thus are cheaper.

Also it can be made slightly cheaper with an afternoon peak restriction.
A Birmingham-Banbury Off Peak Day Return is £10.55 with r/c discount.
The restriction is NOT valid for departures between 1530 and 1815 inclusive. (So for an extra 35p its worth having NO restriction).
