Hi can anyone tell me is it possibe to just insure your car for say 6 months as my 18 year old will be off to Uni in september and my insurance is up this month.....insuring for the full year with my 18 year old on is over £1500 ...insuring for me only is just less than £200. he uses the car occasionally but will prob want to use in the summer while he is off....he's heading to uni in england and wont be taking the car so is it possible to insure for 6 months and then say add him on maybe at christmas ? i will ask when i,m getting quotes but wanted to see if anyone one has any knowledge of this ?

It would be possible to add him to your insurance policy but probably not for 6 months. I think it's normally a maximum of around 1 month.
  • Yes after 6 months make a "change to your policy" and he will be removed. Ask them to confirm but this is what I did with our company.

My 17 year old son is away at college and when he comes home I add him as a temporary driver. This only allows him 31 days driving in a year though. However, he will be off to uni in september anyway, so his 12 months will start again. He is away all summer which is the long stretch when he would have needed the car and the temp driver wouldn't have been any good. It costs me £60 to add him as a temp driver for up to 14 days. much cheaper than the £2200 the insurance companies want for a year. Only thing is he isnt building up any no claims or his own insurance.
  • We put our son on our driving licence when he was learning and asked for him to go on for 3 months only as cost so high, I thought I could have him taught in that time but hw wasnt really in to it so when time was up got him lessons.

My DS is 19 and is now away at University. He passed his test at 17 (July 2009) and we added him as a named driver, when still at school, onto the insurance for our Citroen C3. After getting various quotes, the highest being over £2,000, he paid £750 for the first year with Tesco. At the last renewal (his second year on the policy), the price quoted was £600 (so a 20% fall for 12-months of accident free driving). However, as he was going away to University, we pondered whether to put him on and take him off the insurance as he has 3 terms of 8 weeks which means that he is home for 6 weeks at Christmas, 6 weeks at Easter, and then for the long Summer holidays. However, we eventually decided that he would just pay up since the price quoted had fallen by £150 and we are hoping that this might happen again this year. Also, Tesco claim that when(if) he takes out his own insurance and if it is with them, they will honour any 'no claims' which he might build up (although this would not obviously count if he decided to insure elsewhere).

When I worked it all out, it would have cost around the same to keep taking him on and off the policy and by doing it this way, his part of the premium will hopefully fall again at the next renewal.

Just to update for anyone else. I spoke with M & S who my cheapest quote was with and they told me I can "amend" my policy in 6 months by removing my son and then adding him as a temporary driver when he comes home from Uni ( you can only do this for up to 2 wks 3 times a year ) so may just be as cheap to keep him on it and help build up a no claims for him..........

As a named driver I don't think he will get any no claims discount.

Have you tried getting a quote direct from Budget? M&S insurance is organised by them. And don't forget £35 cashback.
