I have a similar problem (battery no charging needs replacing), does anyone know the answer to the OP's other question, re: non-Dell batteries?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

    Easy way to check
Boot into the BIOS and there is a Power setting, if the Charger reads Unknown, then its the charger at fault.

Ahhh so it could possibly be the charger then...so back to my OP...is it worth paying the extra for a Dell charger, or will a cheap one do just aswell? Have found one on Amazon that seems to good to be true

and it matches the P/Ns number on my battery, although the voltage is higher than my original charger from Dell (that i have kept although not working). How do i know which charger to go for? There seems to be so many types
  • Yes, it means the Battery won't charge if the PSU isn't recognised in BIOS

But it has been charging fine for a few months

It does seem a good price.
On your original charger, what does it say for the following that are from your link:
    Output 19.5V 3.34A
    65W
    PA-21 FAMILY
    DP/N : XK850 or NX061

Also, do you have a 3 pronged power connector for it.
