The ex building societies still typically restrict you on cash handling. e.g. limits on coin, limits on how much you can withdraw over the counter in cash.

As do the banks that have always been banks.

My local Barclays (not a tiny one, it has 4 counter positions) limits withdrawals to £800 per day.

Compare that to my local Halifax, where you can get out £2500 without notice.

But the majority of people do not need to take out this much in cash without knowing about it in advance - there are nearly always much better payment methods available. Barclays' limit of £800 should be more than enough for most people.

They are also pretty light on business services as they are more focused on retail consumers.

Yeah, but most people don't require this. Even the traditional banks are pretty light on providing banking services to charities, but this doesn't make them any worse for the average retail consumer.

i didnt spot the smiley in that post. It has to be a joke...doesnt it? I mean, who would get angry at a a cashless branch not offering cash.

Completely agree with you here ... but it wouldn't surprise me if there were people who get themselves worked up over something like this. (Although I've never heard of a cashless Halifax branch ... so I do wonder whether it's actually that the poster was trying to use a non-branch-based account in a branch, e.g. an internet or self-service account).

Lloyds has no restrictions other than what they can handle at that branch. If you walk in on the spot and want £20k out then they will do it providing it will not wipe them out before their next cash order. If you want to deposit £100 in 2ps then they will take it. Natwest never had any restrictions or HSBC. Barclays have always been a bit different on things but I wonder if that what you have suffered is a local issue due to it being a small branch.
