Car insuraance for US visitor

Can anyone help with the above. I have a visitor with a US driving licence and would occasionally like to drive my car whilst he is here for the next few months. My insurance company says it will only cover "residents" and not visitors.

I found a "temp insurance" company but it doesn't cover US, Australians and Canadians!

Anyone else come across a similar issue?

I have a flatmate with a canadian licence, and insurance providers vary with how they treat her (she is dual nationality and has lived here as a resident for several years now).
I would look for new quotes with your current details and presumably you will get some decent quotes. Then pick the best ones and phone them up and ask them whether they would be able to put a non resident amercian on your insurance, and if so how much extra would it be. Or try just adding them on as a named driver and then checking the small print to see what it says.
If you get a good price, it may be worth cancelling your current policy and taking out a different one.
How no claims works on this I don't know, any ideas folks? If you have only just renewed, presumably you can just use last years. If you are a few months in, can you also just use last years and forego a few months?

Thanks very much anniecave. It just shouldn't be so difficult! I got a shock when I rung up to add my friend and they said couldnt do it!
