...if you buy your tickets online, whether their an Anytime, Off peak or advance then your name now appears on the ticket. I don't know the reason behind this, maybe its to help stop fraud/fare evasion.
I don't know the reason either, but, like you, I suspect it's some sort of anti-fraud measure.

But one thing I am sure of, it does not restrict the ticket to use by that named individual only.

For example, if I buy two tickets for me and a friend to use, they will both have my name on (if they have any name on them).
Is there an opportunity to specify names of all the travelling party?

Another example, I could buy a ticket for another person. Ticket would have my name on it, but I might not be travelling at all.

So clearly, generally speaking, any railway ticket can be used by anyone... if it has a name on it or not.

Are we obliged to carry identity docs to prove the travelling person is named on the ticket?*

*maybe if using a railcard discounted ticket, or a season ticket.

I honestly don't know the answer, wealdroam. All the points you made are correct.

I can see the logic behind the idea of the Railcard holder's name matching up to the discounted railcard ticket as an anti-fare evasion measure.

Perhaps the Train Companies' have a big plan for the future, you know like when they 'simpilified the Tickets' 3 years ago. Lol

  • I work for a train company selling tickets. Unfortunately they adopt the attitude that receipts, etc. are purely for the customers records and do not entitle you to travel. TREAT YOUR TRAIN TICKETS LIKE CASH. If you lose it, it's gone!

They have to to try and prevent fraud.

Do you get your tickets posted to you ? Perhaps the "airline" style tickets don't have your name.
I always collect mine from the (FGW) machine and they have my name on them.

Normally posted - but the last lot I picked up at a ticket machine didn't have my name either. In both cases - 'normal' size tickets - bought through FGW website and picked up at an FGW station.

Haven't had advance purchase one for ages (splitting on off peak returns invariably cheaper) - but I don't recall a name when I last had an advance ticket. As it wasn't for me anyway it would have been a problem and I would have noticed.
