Was it taken by direct debit or did they just help themselves?
Barclays did this to me as well last month.

  • Ok Phone Calls You Can Ignore Them , You Can Shout Abuse Down The Phone At Them , You Can Send Them Letters All Of This Is Usually Ignored By Them The Best And Only Answer Is To Change Your Number And Dont Give It To Any One If Your New Bank Asks You For A Number Give Them A Phone Box Number If You Have A Basic Bank Account They Will Never Contact You Etc Just Change Your Number Save Your Breath And Stamp Money
  • they just helped themselves!

i asked the girl from halifax for the banking ombudsman number:-

1st time i was on hold for ages then the phone went dead!
2nd time i was on hold for ages then the phone went dead!
3rd time i was on hold for ages then she apologised for taking so long as they weren't often asked for the number. she gave me the number and with a snigger wished me luck!

Personally I'm not sure on this one, I've just let Barclays do what they want, they took 3 weeks worth of tax credits (destined for bills) from my personal account and transfered it to my (overdrawn) business account, I'm just letting it ride at the moment because I took the money back from the business account by cashpoint the day before it was due to close so the ball is now in their court as to what to do next.

The Banking Ombudsman has a website, http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/ where you can download a complaint form, from experience I can tell you make sure you send them all (if any) documentation when making a complain and remember to sign the form (even if they return you a copy, if you have to send it back, sign it) otherwise it causes all sorts of problems and delays.

I found the Ombudsman to be very handy, they got me £250 back from Capital One and the threat of getting them involved got £740 back from Bank of Scotland, but these were for different circumstances to yours.

    best of luck.

P.S. The Ombudsman might tell you the bank had the right to do it from your terms and conditions with them, your answer to that is then I'd like to complain about their conduct and unfair terms, I was a bit !!!!ed when they first said that to me but then the penny dropped when the lady said we cannot advise you regarding your complaint, they can't advise, but they can hint what to complain about :)

    Hi there

The Banks try to do this but you can actually make them stop taking essential money from your bank account. Have a look at the consumer action group website. I have really had my eyes opened having joined them. I am in the process of claiming back £439 charges from LTSB and on one account with Bank of Scotland it stands at £2677 in bank charges. It may be that you can claim back charges which will go against your debt.

    Good luck
