Suspicious e-mail

How can I find out who really sent me an e-mail.
I've received a message from somebody asking questions about a car I used to own. The sender says the car is now for sale in a garage in the Midlands and is thinking of buying it. He says he got my e-mail address from the owners club and wants to know if I would mind giving some of the car's previous history. All very plausible except the car is in Somerset and is still owned by the guy I sold it too.
The name and e-mail address appear to be genuine as I found them on a car club website along with an address and 'phone number. I rang up using "number withheld" but got an answering machine. I left a cryptic message without leaving details of who I am.
My thoughts are that: -
1) The message is genuine but the car is a fake, so the sender has been duped by the garage. If this is the case I should get another e-mail as a result of my 'phone call.
2) The message is spam but the sender is genuine, unlikely unless they are stupid.
3) The sender is fake and has hijacked someone elses identity.
4) Everything is genuine, but someone has made a simple mistake with the registration number.

I have not replied to the e-mail, but I'm concerned that this is a case of identity theft or car fraud. Consequently I would like to find out who actually sent the e-mail then I can take it further.

If you look at the header of the email there should be an IP address for origin then lookup that IP address and see if it seems like it's the right ISP.
