Killing grass and weeds in an unlined gravel driveway?

Hi guys and gals,

Need some advice. My house has a gravel drive (big enough for two/three cars, there when I bought it), and it is obviously either totally unlined or the lining is next to useless, as weeds and grass have grown through it at a rate of knots the last couple of years. I did try to keep on top of it weeding manually, but you can imagine how that went in a space that size and compacted with limited time... :o

Getting the whole drive re-done isn't really an option right now due to the cost, but the whole thing looks a right mess as it stands. I don't have any flower beds or the like to worry about, the whole thing is gravel and has no use other than parking, so any suggestions as to the best ways to kill off everything in it, preferably for a while? I can't do burning due to wooden fences, and I'd prefer to try a more organic approach over breaking out any (expensive!) brand name chemicals, but all ideas welcome. I've got both a dedicated weedkiller can and hand sprayer I can use, if that helps. :)

Thanks!

~Jes :)

It has to be Roundup or similar unless you love being on hands & knees all summer

Forget your organic wishes and just do it

Or use loads of salt, which while organic is hardly nature friendly

If it's not going to run off into watercourses or onto plants, Pathclear contains glyphosate (the active weedkiller ingredient you need) plus something else which will have a longer lasting effect.

We have a weed wand which keeps them at bay, but they just grow back again...

pathclear or other weedkiller to knock them back to a level where you can pick the odd weed that reappears by hand.;)

    Hi All

I have the same problem as OP.

Do you think its worth doing now before they start to appear and take hold or would that be a waste of money?

We had horrendous problems last year all over the gravel drive and currently no funds to re do at the moment.

If you're using glyphosate-based weedkiller, it only works once the weed is growing as it is absorbed into the system of the plant and is translocated down to the roots. No point in doing it now.

If you have existing weeds but which aren't growing much, you could try a contact herbicide but that will only kill what is there at present.
