Tokyo and Japan

Options
I've heard from many people that Japan and Tokyo can be very expensive. I will be visiting Tokyo in April and possibly also Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima.

Can anyone recommend any affordable places to sleep/eat/drink in the cities?

  • Hi,

I usually stay in hostels but as Tokyo is huge I stayed in a hotel. I strongly recommend the Mitsui Garden Hotel Yotsuya. The hotel is around £44 per night (book on expedia.co.uk + go through quidco.com to get cashback)

I strongly recommend you book this Tokyo day tour it is £75 per person but it also includes a lunch on the top floor of a Tokyo hotel which gives great views of the bay area (google Viator.com discount codes to get 5%-20% off). Avoid the Mount Fuji tour. I found it pretty boring to be honest!

As for flights, Air China might be your best bet. You get a stopover in Beijing for a few nights if you wish for not a lot extra (https://www.airchina.com)

I recently stayed at Ryokan Ohto in Kyoto which was reasonably priced, nice rooms and very centrally located. It's about a 8 minute walk from Kyoto station and is also on the main bus route. There's plenty of places to eat inside Kyoto station ranging from budget price to OMG how much?! prices.

If you go to Hiroshima, take a trip to Miyajima too. It's a short train ride followed by 10 mins on the ferry. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, take the ferry that leaves from the right hand side (there are 2 ferry services) as your pass is valid on that one. There's lots of free range deer on Miyajima and you can do a nice walk around the island. Try the oysters and maple leaf cakes with assorted fillings. :)

In Kyoto my DS would highly recommend https://www.kyoto-shimizu.net/ for location, price and friendliness, he found the staff very helpful and said he experienced a real japanese way of life by staying there
