Waiting on a new Credit Card...

I won the bidding on a faulty laptop a couple of days ago, for 60 quid. I went to pay the buyer, only to discover that i'd lost my credit card. I know thats my fault. I quickly rang my card company and theyve got a new one sent out, but in the meantime my existing card has been cancelled, and there could be a 4-5 day wait on my new card, I could have to wait until Wednesday of next week before I receive it.

Originally I messaged the seller on ebay saying my card had been lost but i should still be able to pay Friday by the latest, I had no idea it took this long to receive new cards.

Basically, after all that, the point of this thread is to ask how long by laws/ebay rules do I have to pay before he can get impatient and relist the item?

I have 100% feedback which hopefully goes some way to showing him im not a timewaster.

  • Sorry, but if you only buy items, then 100% feedback means nothing as sellers can no longer give negative.

Is there any chance you can ring your card company and get the details from them?

I think that as far as ebay are concerned, you have 7 day to pay (someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

    Alternatively, can't you use Paypal?

Seconded. Feedback is now worthless. 7 days is the accepted limit but as you've told the seller you have a problem, then they may be flexible. I've had that situation as a seller myself and in that case it took a fortnight but as the buyer kept me informed, I was happy to wait.

I've searched through the Ebay help pages for this recently as one of my buyers is waiting (with my agreement) to see if she wins any more of my auctions.

A NPB case can be filed after 4 days from end of auction and up to a maximum of 32 days from end of auction. (The NPB thing needs to be done to reclaim Ebay fees.) Feedback can be left up to a maximum of 60 days from end of auction. People can disregard these dates if they are happy to lose the selling fees (because Ebay don't care if you reclaim them or not - it's just extra money for them) and forgo leaving the optional feedback.

Basically, you need your seller to agree to wait as there is nothing to stop him filing a NPB before your new credit card arrives. OTOH, if you are nice and polite then there's no reason to suppose your seller won't be equally nice and let you wait. I'm sure replacement credit cards must catch out a few people all the time.

    I buy and sell :)

I could use paypal, but I only had my credit card registered to it, which has since been cancelled, so I cant use that now, until my new one arrives.

You could offer to pay by bank transfer, but advise the buyer that it might be better to wait until you can pay by paypal so that you're both covered by paypal protection? Hopefully that'll reassure them that you're a genuine buyer.
