cancelling an ebay bid

Hi, I was just wondering whether someone could give me some advice. A buyer has won one of my ebay auctions, but has just messaged me saying that their account was hacked, this is the message they sent:

'Someone has hacked my ebay, and purchased this, I do not wish to purchase it, could we cancel the bid please or I will need to return it and be refunded or something. Sorry...'

I don't know what to do. The item was only bought for 99p, but I know won't sell easily if re-listed. I don't want to lost my FVFs as it does sound like the seller has just changed their mind. What should I do?

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Lol, you would think the hackers would have chosen a higher priced item to buy!

I would just send a mutal cancellation if youre not bothered about it and you'll get your fees back.

  • I'm just worried that the buyer won't honour the mutual cancellation, as in the past I've had buyers saying they'll agree to the cancellation but then don't and have left me negative feedback :S

    Under what circumstances?

They've offered a cancellation, which I would take.

  • In the past there was a disagreement in that I didn't do a postage discount whereas the buyer assumed I would without asking me, he won about 6 items in total and then refused to pay as he thought it was too much.

So I said I'd agree to cancel as I could easily sell the items on, but then he didn't agree so I lost my fees and got a strike, even though I don't think I did anything wrong. :(

That's a bit different as the buyer had - however subjective - an issue with you. Also, he might still have wanted the items - would it really have been that hard to send the items together and then refund him a bit to cover what you saved sending them together?

This may be a lot simpler to handle.

  • Well yes I'm hoping so, but as the last one was completely based on cost by weight I couldn't lower the price, which the buyer couldn't seem to fathom. But yes I see where you are coming from, and so might give it another shot and keep my fingers crossed.

I usually 'accidentally' open a full NPB on day 4 and if buyer moans I apologise for being a dizzy blonde and suggest they contact ebay about cancelling the whole transaction without loss to either of us. Obviously ebay don't give a hoot but hopefully it will take 4 days by which time you can close the dispute.

  • Well I cancelled the item and the buyer did too so all good, it's just a shame that ebay is designed for buyers and not sellers really. But I like your idea Soolin, might decide to go for that approach in future...flippin time-wasters are a pain in the behind.
