Young (male) drivers car insurance (again)

Hi there, I know this subject comes up every now and then, but wanted to know if anyone had recently had a reasonable (joke) quote for car insurance for 18 year old boy who has just passed his driving test?
I knew this would be difficult, but getting very fed up now.
When my son was learning last year I looked into putting him on my own insurance so I could take him out in the family Zafira. My own company quoted £7k to add him as a learner - ha!
Eventually we bought him a Ford Ka and insured him using Collingwoods learner insurance on a monthly basis. Brilliant it was as it meant I could take him out and th cost was a touch under £100 a month, but expected and do-able.
Now he has passed his test - and guess what? The first thing he now can't do is drive his car!!! Absolutley amazing.
I've been doing the trawls with him on the various comparison sites and the cheapest so far is about £3k !!!
I thought Coverbox might be an option, but that came in at over £4k.
Waste of time. I wonder if he should not drive now until 19 and then try again.....
Even all the supposed web sites that sing out that they are specialists in young drivers insurance are just no different from any others.
Does anyone have any good stories at all????

try churchill we found them the cheapest, but still £1600. it will also depend on your postcode and your sons occupation on what the quote will be.0

Try Adrian Flux or a smaller firm and make sure you are down as a named drived. I went with them years ago, they seem well known for dealing with higher risk drivers. Think they are a broker so will in theory know the right place to look. I remember the customer service being excellent, far better than any company direct.0

i was always a named driver on my other sons policies it brought the price down by a fair bit, but churchill quoted cheaper with him on his own, plus if any other family have insurance with them it also brings price down.
also with some insurers if your son sits his pass plus it can bring price down with some insurers but not all.0 -

Just spoke to them and very helpful. But still 3rd party quote of £2800, £3400 fully comp with me down as named driver too...
I should have had daughters.0 -
Just talked to someone at another company (M & S, my own insurer) and she told me that the £3k type of quote was probably the best sort of price we'd be looking for.
In a way makes a mockery of even taking the test - what's to celebrate?
No way we can afford that for insurance.0 -
Hi
BeWiser insurance, alot of my friends have used them and they are pretty good.
Hope this helps, I will be in the same boat as you in July!!!!!!0 -
Have you tried just going 3rd party fire and theft?, after all if the difference was more than the cars worth or he has to have a huge excess its not worth being fully comp.0

Thanks for this. I reckon I must be filling out the online forms and ticking a box that I shouldn't. Best quote was £4573 for 3rd party. Cripes!0 -

Yes thanks have tried both.
In a couple of examples 3rd party has been a couple of hundred quid cheaper. £2800 is my best 3rd party quote.0
