My insurance is way cheaper than quotes

Can anyone explain whats happeing here? My current car insurance with Elephant is £330 for 10 months and thats with 6 years no claims and a £250 excess. Ive tried a few price comparrison websites to see if I could get it bit cheaper but the cheapest I've been quoted is almost double what I currently pay. I tried Aviva and their '12 weeks free car insurance' offer and even that came to £900 - less the 12 weeks, bringing it down to £700!! As a little experiment I got an online qoute from Elephant as a new customer (baring in mind that's whom I'm with now) and they quoted me £550. I know there is a lot of room for haggling with the insurance companies but from what I can tell, for once, it almost pays to stay loyal to an insurance company and that if you are trying to find a new insurance provider they are going to try and rip you off.

You won't say that when the renewal comes through at £950.
But if Elephant are still the cheapest, go for it, just make sure they match the new customer price.

Why not "make sure" they beat it?

    I'm not greedy.
I've always said insurers will sell insurance for a price they can make a profit on.
If they can offer a price to new customers, and make a profit on it, they should offer the same price to existing customers, and not try to overcharge on renewals.
So always shop round, and go for the best deal.
