** Cruise on the Nile, disrupted by violence ** Advice on Thomas Cook **

Hello all,

Just quickly, this forum is the source of riches, and advice ladened posts that no money can buy! A community of such of knowledge, and good intentions at heart is what leads me to this posting.

As you well know, the citizens of Egypt are protesting against the current dictatorship in which they live. We have all seen this progessively escalate since last Tuesday, and each day has presented a country falling deeper into the hands of extremists.

Cut short, my mum is on a 2 week cruise on the River nile. She departed on 24/01/2011, and is due to return on the 07/02/2011. My Mother arrived in Egypt on Monday to which things were fairly calm, and in no way comparable to what we see today. On Tuesday (25/01/2011) things began to gradually escalate, but not enough to interupt with daily excursions through, and around Cairo. Wednesday saw the whole situation cascade into looting, rioting, violence, racially motivated attacks, the list is long! By thursday, things were so bad my mum and all the people on the cruise had to remain inside the boat, at all times. On Friday I felt nothing but helplessness, my Mother phoned to say looters attempted to board the boat, to which 2 army officials had to be placed on the boat. My mum remained there until Sunday where she eventually moved, and got on to another boat further up river. In those 3 days my Mother was unable to do anything, and was almost forced to adhere to strict rules as set by the tour operator.

So clearly my mum has missed at least 3 days of the planned itinery, and my Mother recently informed me she is returning this Friday (4/2/2011), that's 3 days early.

Does my Mother stand good grounds to claim for a refund or partial refund?

Is it likely that Thomas Cook will not refund my Mother due to not covering 'acts of terroism'?

I greatly thank all readers and posters!

Matthew

Look at your insurance first, I suggest.

Your mother may also want to contact the British Embassy in Cairo and follow the other steps here...

This policy does not cover the following:
    1. Any consequence whatsoever which is the direct or indirect result of any of the following, or anything connected with any of the following, whether or not such consequence has been contributed to by any other cause or event:
      • a. war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities or a warlike operation or operations (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, civil commotion assuming the proportions of or amounting to an uprising, military or usurped power.
      • b. any action taken in controlling, preventing, suppressing or in any way relating to a) above.
Does this cover it ? Probably a similar clause in most travel policies.

well its a rebellion isnt it? i haven't been watching the news but thats what i gather is going on, in which case that clause would probably demolish any chance of a refund.

You really need to take it up with Thomas Cook in the first instance to see what they offer
