I'm on mains gas now, when I used oil, I found Baxter Johnston Oils the best for price (kero)

Hi Welda, thanks VM.
That's who we are with just now.
I think OH and I have to deal with the possibility the oil is being stolen from us, and start preventative measures.
Our old boiler, was filled once every 3 months. Got the new boiler in, end of November, and it needed filled end December and refilled again today.
There's no way we have used 924 litres!bam bam bammy Shore by The Revellers...do do de de do.0 -
One of our local primary schools had all their heating oil stolen over the weekend and the school had to be closed until more oil was delivered.
Now oil is so expensive I suppose we will have to be much more vigilant.0 -
Your welcome and, Hmmmmmmmmmm not nice if getting nicked? A bit of a long shot here, you would of course notice if you had a leak somewhere around boiler, just thought with it being new, possibly to be compounded with perhaps boiler not set up correctly? I'm probably way off base with former and latter!
If tank is close to house, set up a cctv camera to monitor when you guys aint around, add to this, PIR light and some signs to say area is monitored by CCTV, or you could buy a HUGE killer dug
Ps, I'll ask my ex if she is free weekends for guard duty :rotfl:0 -
I ring Brogan Fuels, Scottish Fuels and Johnston for prices before I order. It's quite surprising how they differ. Scottish Fuels tend to match the other rates if they are cheaper though.
We are in a fairly rural spot so do worry about getting kerosene stolen but we've decided not to attempt locking the tank or securing it. Friends of ours, a few miles from us, spent quite a bit on some kind of locking device and ended up with a bigger problem. the would be fuel thieves who targetted them punctured the tank, presumably in a fit of temper when they couldn't get to the fuel (that was the theory of the local police who had seen it before) and 1200 litres of kerosene was running down their driveway.
It's been a bit of a nightmare for them as their insurers are claiming they are covered for theft but not vandalism and SEPA are now hounding them as the leaking kerosene made it's way into the local burn. we had been thinking we should get some kind of a lock but after their experience we've decided to leave our tank as it is.0 -
Very unfortunate situation for your neighbours, I'm surprised they did not have a "bunded" tank to do away with pollution risk, of did the pond life break both skins?
Personally, I was fortunate as tank was within my walled rear garden, which was removed by me late 2004, before kero and the like started hitting the roof.
A mate of mine who uses oil and lives in the sticks, is making a new tank from stainless steel, he is then going to install tank underground, kero will be pumpedout to bo iler and, there will be secure service hatches for access.
Country is going to the dogs when you have to go to such measures to protect your own, in this case, heating fuel0 -

do you realise that these 3 companies are owned by the same people? gb oils / dcc.
i don't know how they can offer such different prices from eachother, then 'pricematch' their own company?!0 -
drastic measures required indeed!
It was a fairly new tank as the house is only 4 years old. To be honest I was astonished they managed to "burst" it so badly but the police said they were well prepared for theft and malicious damage if they couldn't get their intended goods.
Whilst they've been quite shaken by the whole incident the worst part has been the way SEPA are treating them. They are taking a very hard line and have even suggested there may be a prosecution and fine. Talk about kicking someone when they are down!
We've had our tank for 14 years and I come out in a cold sweat every time I ring to get a price for oil. When we first filled the tank it was 9p a litre, I don't even want to think about the current price. I'm now researching multi fuel stoves as we think it may be a sensible investment. It would also give us a backup when the power is off and we have no heat.
Never did I think the cost of filling the tank would be into 4 figures:eek:0 -

trust me the prices vary wildly. My parents buy significant quantities of fuel - white diesel, red diesel and gas oil as they have several businesses and would never dream of buying without phoning round and comparing.
Not only do they match the price sometimes but on occassion they will better it!0 -
OH is has rang the guy who installed it, ( known him for years, so trust is not an issue )
He's going to pressure test the under ground pipe that feeds the boiler.
I'm hoping that's what it is. It's horrible to think of someone sneaking about your property stealing from you. We live in a rural spot, and only have two neighbours. So going to get the CCTV and lights set up also.
The old system.....September/October and November a tank fill lasted 3 months.....the new tank was fitted mid November, filled the end of November, end of December and today. 700 litres December and 924 litres today.
OH said it's definately not possible....even with the heating on 24/7.
Going to ring the boiler supplier tomorrow and ask what the fuel consumption per hour is for the Rhino.Your welcome and, Hmmmmmmmmmm not nice if getting nicked?
