Advice needed on car insurance please

Hi Everybody. My new car arrives tomorrow and for the past week I've been sitting on a great quote given to me by Diamond - my previous car insurers. I could only pay today as I was waiting for money to clear in my account.

The original quote was £793 and has been quoted to me several times during the past week. However today - as I was about to give them my card number, they stopped and said a claim had been flagged up on the system.

It was for a minor accident I had three years ago and today I got told that the owner of the other vehicle claimed £2,700 on my insurance and said his car was a write off!!!! I am beyond in shock for a few reasons. Firstly I had no idea they had even paid out anything - no-one ever told me. Secondly it was such a minor accident, there was no damage to either car, we both drove off after five minutes - how can it be a write off?

Regardless......Diamond have really annoyed me and upped my insurance quote to £917. I feel they haven't done their job properly - as I've been on Go Compare for the past few weeks saying that there had been no monies paid out on my insurance. I had no idea.

They apologised, said they were at fault - I should have been informed, but said there's nothing they can do now.

I need car insurance within 24 hours and I'm nervous about going with a new company when I have only ever experienced Diamond. I am getting some great prices come up but I don't think you ever know how good an insurance company is until you've made a claim or needed their help.

So I guess I'm asking for recommendations - sorry for the long post.

Have you declared the accident and claim on your other quotes?
Did Diamond reduce your ncd, or is it protected. If it's not protected, they could still reduce it, and that would have to be reflected on the quotes you are getting.
  • I still have two years NCD - I am getting good quotes including a great one from Admiral. I'm just not sure who to go with.
