You can deffinitely do this yourself as we did with my late nan. There are loads of companies who are charge £1000's for doing it but I reckon its 90% just form filling and the probate registries are there as a public service to be helpful. The Probate registry address is: HMCS court service
When it comes to what you do and in what order you can check out diy books online and they all say pretty much the same thing. With the letters you need you can download the standard ones for free at not pretty but gives you the gist.
Also, you shoukld check out citizens advice bureau as they aren;t specialists but love form filling!
