Car seat help needed.

We are looking at getting a second car seat for my husband's car as the new one will only have 3 doors and it will be a problem switching the one we have now between cars.
We have a Maxi Cosy Priori at the moment and are happy with it but it only goes up to about 4 years and DS is 3 1/2 now so don't want to buy the same one again if we might only get 6 months use.
So I think we are looking at the 1-2-3 type that "grow with your child". Unless these are much less safe for the children that could still be in a stage 1 seat, so at the lighter end of the range?
Also is is considered safer to have the five point safety harness or the normal seatbelt?
Is there a feature that I would really want a car seat to have - I know that when we looked at the last seat, it was all about the side impact head support IIRC.
I'm getting really confused about which to buy and can't seem to find any safety test results online.
Any advice or recommendations on where to look or who to ask would be lovely.

I have one of these

5 point harness till they grow then uses the seat belt. Its a bit upright for a 9 month old (now 14) but he is only using it for local trips at the mo and has a http://www.britax.co.uk/car-seats/car-seats/first-class-plus in the family car for big trips.
He loves sitting up front with dad in it (no air bag fitted). It is really secure and with the 5 point there is no way he could escape.0
