Getting it working with the TV using the main display output that is usually used for the PC monitor would be the first thing so I think connecting the main video out on the PC, VGA connector or DVI to VGA converter would be best to use first of all AFTER setting the resolution and refresh rate of the main monitor to a resolution and refresh rate that the TV VGA input will accept. That is why I think cherry needs to consult the TV manual to see what resolutions and refresh rates the TV VGA input supports because some TV's are very fussy about it. Then set the main display resolution AND refresh rate to those values before replacing the cable with the one to the TV. Powering off before changing the cables is recommended. If you use a CRT PC monitor, the older big thick ones, the refresh rate is usually fairly high at around 85Hz. That will probably be too high for a TV. LCD screens use lower refresh rates.
Once a display is being obtained I think setting up a 2nd display for use with the TV might be beneficial so the usual PC monitor can be used as normal. That's when messing around with extended desktops etc can be done.
It's already been stated but I will repeat it, displays are usually only detected when the PC boots up so changing the cables and then booting the PC is a good idea. Setting the TV to the correct input for the VGA connector should also be done before booting the PC.
Cherry, do you have the TV set to the VGA input before you are attempting to get the TV recognized? Looking at the TV manual to ensure that the correct input setting is activated would be helpful, it can probably be downloaded if you don't have it handy.
