Job offer subject to credit check?!

Afternoon all :-)

Please help I'm having a right panic! I have posted this in the employment forum but cross posting here also as you lot have saved my life a couple of times!

OMG Help! I've just accepted a fantastic new job with a major player in the financial market as a sales rep selling financial products ie chip and pin

Recd the offer letter this morning and it says the offer is subject to credit checks and I'm bricking it now as I have literally just got a CCJ and I'm on a DMP with CCCS!

One of the reasons I went for this job as its a lot more money and I'll be able to get all my debts paid off.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Are they just making sure I'm not a fraudster with a criminal record of money laundering or am I in the proverbial brown stuff?!

I'm so worried and a bit confused as its not like I will be handling cash- I'm just a sales rep!

If it is for a large bank I would be highly surprised if they employed you.
I work in the finance industry and that question is normally a formal statement made by the interviewer at the beginning. i.e. "If you have bad credit or CCJ's you will not be employed"

They should only be able to get the public data on you and as such it won't include your CCJ or your DMP with the CCCS.

I have 2 accounts in Default, and am on a DMP with CCCS, my credit rating with Call credit one of the others is around 450 and the public data (for employees and landlords) is around 750 (the UK average) I'd advise doing a month credit check with call credit on all 3 providers. I use them and the data is pretty good from all 3 Costs £17.95 every 3 months but I started about 12 months ago I don't know what the pricing structure is now.

I wouldn't be too worried, but I'm no expert on this front and don't know what they can legally get hold of?

Proud to be dealing with my debts

Oh no. I want to say congratulations on the job but I don't know how much it will affect it.

I think I would consider phoning them up and explaining that you are on a DMP and that you have a CCJ and this will come up on their search. Hopefully they fact that you are on a DMP and clearly taking steps to clear your debts might help. They are obviously going to find out anyway and at least then you'll have been upfront about it.

I had a friend who was turned down for a job in a newsagent with a post office because of his CCJs - although these were just consumer credit debts not anything to do with fraud. Though of course he would have been handling cash etc.

They will do a full credit check, they will see everything.

They can see CCJs - on the registery trust website (anyone can search for any person's CCJs on this for a fee). They won't see a DMP as such as this is not a legal thing. But if they ask her permission for a full credit check they will see any defaults etc on file.

Thank you everyone for your replies! I have just called the agency that placed me there and he said he is pretty sure they will just want to make sure I haven't been made bankrupt but he is going to find out for me and ring me back this afternoon. I have also emailed the HR lady who sent me the job offer asking for clarification just saying I haven't been asked this before and got an out of office reply back so I wont hear back from her until tomorrow. God I feel sick!

No I wasn't asked that at all, first I heard of it was in the offer letter.

I started with a huge financial institution in September last year and went through the same thing. My credit rating is shot to pieces and I have a protected trust deed (Scotland). I explained this to them and all they requested were copies of my bank statements to prove I was paying what I should every month. As long as you're honest with them it shouldn't be an issue.
    Hope this helps :)

    Well prepare to be suprised!
I rang the guy who will be my boss and explained everything, having interviewed me he already knew I had worked for 2 companies that had gone bust which is the reason for my financial issues. He said he really appreciated my honesty and that all they were looking for was bankruptcy and to make sure I had been living where I said I had been living. He spoke to the HR Director just to make sure and they are happy to proceed! Phew!
