House insurance claim

Hi all you enlightened people you!

My friend has recently had a flood in an sort of out house that is large enough to live in.

Well they have decided to claim on insurance to get the works done, they have requested my help as a Quantity Surveyor to give a rough estimate of what the cost will be.

Well as i'm unsure as to the rules of insurance and given that times are hard, I wanted to know if;

1) after they recieve the quotes they issue a cheque or do it on a cheque on an invoice basis
2) the likelihood of them checking that the works are done as specified.

All help appreciated.

    Well your friend needs to contact the Insurers to find out the process. Depending on the value, some Insurers have their own companies that sort out water damage claims, as well as dealing with any replacement items. If this is the case, there won't be any need for any form of cash settlement to policyholder or contractors they employed directly.

    Your post suggests that your friend is looking to gain some advantage from a claim situation, by either not getting repairs done or getting another friend to do a cheap cash job.

    If you can post up the approx value of the claim and which company will be dealing with it, there might be other posters who might know the normal process that the company follows.
    The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • I think it would seem that way after assessing what they have asked for in the form of materials and works, but making your house better who can blame them?

    However once i've helped price it, I have no furthur involvement.

    Having not priced it detailed it yet, about 5k.
