Hey,
My eMachines E4264 Desktop has decided to die on me. I was streaming tv online when it made weird noises, slurred speech and the screen shut off but the machine kept whirring.

I disconnected the power and everything attached to it. Tried turning it back on a number of times (with screen, keyboard and mouse re-attached), either just whirrs with no screen or claims Floppy Drive A is connected (don't have a floppy drive) or says something about the bios but won't register the keyboard to let me press F1 to continue.

Can anyone suggest a way to fix this? or is it just worth burying it and getting a better looking younger model?

Thank you

..... Now when turn it on, no screen, just whirrs with a high pitched beep which last about 5 seconds with about 2 second intervals!
Never knock on death's door, ring the doorbell and run away ..... he hates that

1 long beep usually indicates a memory problem. Take off the lid, remove the memory, clean the contacts and replace.

Ok appears to be working now, acknowledges the keyboard aswell so could skip past the bios page.

Seems to be loading up fine now, thank you for your help

PC still seems to be whirring very loudly though....

Borroy a few keyboards and try the F1 to continue thing, have come accross incompatible keyboards / BIOS recovery efforts on a number of occasions and once you get a keyboard your BIOS 'likes' it often springs right back to life.

(Don't go and buy one / any)

Best chance for compatibility would be if you can lay your hands on an old fasioned PS2 type one
