Tax Rebate - future taxation

Hi,
First of all, I have tried to find this elsewhere but can't. Secondly, my payslip has gone missing but hopefully my question is vague enough.
I receive the same amount each month in salary to within 3 or so pence.
In January, I have received a letter from HMRC, giving me a rebate of £530. I presumed that I have been paying £45 per month too much in tax and that my subsequent net salary would increase by that amount.
Instead it has dropped by £9.00.
Was I correct in my first presumption?
