Wireless Network Problem

Hi,

I have a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router on my broadband pc and have a laptop with a Netgear WG111v2 usb adapter.

These have been working fine and I can connect my laptop all around the house without a problem - until now.................

For some reason it just won't connect on my laptop????? The icon shows that its connected and is yeallow to mean its ok. If I look at the network on my laptop it shows connected with 82% signal which is fine. If I look at the network connections on my pc is shows there are 2 icons - one labelled Local Area Connection 2 and 1394 connection - both it says are connected. I have tried to repair the connections just in case they have a problem - the first one does it ok the second one says it cannot repaur because TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection.

My pc runs XP Pro and the laptop runs ME.

Any ideas as to how I can get my laptop connecting would be great.

thanks!

  • I don't know a lot about wireless, but when I had a similar problem I seem to remember something like this, click on your connection >then properties, in the box that opens click on the 4th one down marked internet protocol (tcp/ip) then properties, ensure the button obtain an IP address automatically is filled, then ok , now try to connect, I hope this helps. Alan.

  • Thanks Alan,

had a look and this box is checked.

Thanks for taking the time to help though
  • I think I may have fixed it. On my laptop there were pop ups coming in about my Sygate firewall trial expiring or similar. I just kept closing it down without doing anything.

Have just done an uninstall and reboot an dthe connection is back.

My xp pc has Kerio as firewall - will get this on laptop as well to prevent any conflict issues that may have caused the problem. Still dont really know what caused it but just grateful its back working.
  • I am also clueless when it comes to networking, but I think 1394 applies to an internal network (NIC?) card. Or is that Local Area Network 2? I have similar icons on my laptop when I view 'network connections' but I also have one named '3Com' for the wireless network signal.

I also run an ME laptop (and pc & XP laptop) on a wireless adsl/router. I was thinking about encrypting the 'signal' for security (those pesky neighbours! ;) ) but ME does not work on WPA encryption whereas XP does. ME has to have WEP encryption (or the other way round? I'm always getting my WPAs and WEPs mixed up!)

You haven't recently 'secured' your network have you?

1394 is a firewire connection which can also be used for networking
