I am claiming income support - can I work overtime?

I am claiming income support as I am a single parent working 8 hours per week. Someone at work has gone long term sick and I have been asked if I would like to do some overtime. Can I do this without it affecting my benefits? It will only be an extra 4 hours or so a week and definitely less than 8.

You can keep the first £20, then it's deducted £1 for £1.

  • Do I have to phone them to tell them I have worked the extra hours? How does it work - sorry, I'm new to all this!

the OP won't be allowed to keep the first £20, as they already keep the first £20 from the hours worked already!
once they earn £20.01 more than the amount of income support, the benefit will stop.
    hope that makes sense.

    oops!

You may need to send them pay slips each week. There should be a number on your IS award letter that you can phone. They can advise you on what you need to give them.
