Choosing a surveyor

I've recently had an offer accepted on a house, valuation has come back fine, so it's time for a full structural survey (building survey).
I've got some quotes, which range from £350 all the way up to £600.
My question is, how do a choose my surveyor? Is cost the only consideration? If not, what else is important?
Finally, can anyone recommend a surveyor in the thames valley area?
Thanks in advance!!

My solicitor (being local and trusted) respond to my query on the subject with a couple of names, of those who helped make their life easier...worth a shot? Not knowing the area, I cannot be specific.Act in haste, repent at leisure.

Have a chat with your Estate Agent - they should be able to recommend two or three local surveyors so you can get quotes from a few and compare prices.0

Ensure they are a member of RICS0

Ensure whoever undertakes the survey is a Fellow of the RICS, that usually means they have been a member for many years or have contributed towards the profession.
Full structural should be around the £900 for say a £300K house, be careful you are getting the right type of survey and not just a normal one (that is if you want such).
£350 - £600 sounds too cheap for a structural survey.
I cannot recommend a surveyor in your area, but this should help.

I would ditto most coments and would suggest you visit the Find a Surveyor website through RICS.
I would recommend you make sure you choose surveyor whose firm is regulated by the RICS.
The RICS monitors all their firms and ensures they are following stringent rules of conduct which protects the public.
I hope this helps0
