Married Persons Tax Allowance

Hi all. Am a bit confused as to Married persons Tax allowance.

My partner and i got married in April last year. We are in our 30s and 40s.
Can we claim married persons tax allowance? I have looked at the HMRC website but its very confusing.

All help gratefully received.

  • no, they abolished it about 10 years ago and brought in tax credits (was called something else for the first year, but can't remember what). Married persons allowance is only for much older married couples (over 65 from memory)

I think it is only available to someone born prior to 1935.
