Marks and Spencers-Really annoyed

Yesterday I went for an interview at Marks and Spencers(I have worked at two previously so would be going back as a rejoiner) and I went their with all my id, but no photocopies.

I was told that as I didn't have any photocopies they couldn't proceed with the interview, and they said they didn't have a photocopy :mad::mad::mad:

This has never happened to me before, and I was just wondering if it is usual practice, feel like putting in a complaint.

  • That's a bit off.

I've always been told to bring originals and photocopies if that was the case.

couldn't you have asked them if you could pop to the newsagent down the road or whatever to make the copies yourself - seeing as you didn't know about the copy requirement? did they maybe say in a letter somewhere - is so wouldn't the onus be on you to read it?

I wouldn't have thought it is the kind of thing that is worth complaining about, assuming you want to be on good terms with them/work there again- how did you leave it ? Are you going back? I think I would be seeing it more as lesson learned (and have id copies ready in a folder for next time) than opportunity to complain, and be doing everything I could to reschedule.

Good luck with your job hunting though!

I did ask if I could go and use a local shop to do the photocopies but the lady said she was interviewing someone straight after me, so she wouldn't have time to wait.

I'm not going back, spent nearly £10 getting there, and can't afford that again on Friday, plus it is quite a distance.

I am currently working for an agency so will just stick at that, and keep looking for a permanent role.

shame they wouldn't let you do the copies after - that's annoying when you have travelled and spent money out - hope you get a permanent role soon

Were you advised to bring photocopies prior to the interview?

Hi,no I wasn't. I was just told to take my documents and a passport photo.

The lady who was going to give me the interview told me that on the website it states you have to bring photocopies but I can't find it anywhere.

thats odd cos copies can be tampered with and no empoyer wants to see copies, always originals

Well, just called the recruitment line as I saw another vacancy I'm interested in, and explained to a really friendly guy what had happened to me yesterday, and he said that they would never ask for copies, only originals, and to make a complaint, so I will be writing to the store manager with the details.

They didn't ask you to bring just photocopies though did they?

Employers always need original documents & checking that original document against a copy & keeping the copy would be fine.

I guess they didn't have a copier or it was broke & someone got confused passing the message on.

Hardly anything to complain about if you do want to work there.

I thought it was normal for an interviewer to make photocopies themself, thus giving them certainty they hadn't been tampered with...? How bizarre.
