Gas Cooker Clicking

Recently, when ever I turn any of hob rings on, even though ring ignites, am getting constant clicking, as the other rings are trying to ignite, but not turned on. Tried turning all on, but doesn't help.
I realize that either the cooker is dying a death, or, I need to replace a part, but don't know what part. Just don't want to get ripped off, when it will be totally obvious that I am clueless!
If it's a new cooker, then so be it, but have got quite attached to my Moffat, it has done me so well for years. Any suggestions greatfully accepted.

I have had the same problem with mine for ages.I am told its something called a Thermal Coupler thats the problem but I am afraid I have no idea how to fix/replace it.

I had this problem and got this solution from
    http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/

The most common reason for this is water inside (or behind) the ignition button. Try spraying the button with a water displacing spray such as WD40. Remember to unplug the cooker from the mains first if the ignition is mains powered!

My hubby has a can of air he uses to 'dust' computer bits..............I used that...............worked a treat :)

Many thanks cslogg and trafalgar. Will try the can of air or wd40 things first, and if that fails, then will look into the thermal coupler. :)

    Hi Anne Marie,
a couple of things to check!

Is it just one burner that has the sparking problem or is it all of them?
If it just the one then check that the burner itself is clean (has a constant flame all around the disc) because the little spark electrode must be sitting in the flame when it is on. (For the technically minded this is called Flame Rectification)

If it is all the burners then it is probably the leads to the spark ignition unit which is at fault or the actual unit itself - this sits under the hob.
Prices for the spark units vary quite a bit dependant on the model hob.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Gaz.
No matter which burner I put on, the others start clicking away (but not necessarily all at once). All burners do ignite with no problem, it is just the constant clicking which is driving me batty. Even when I am using all 4 burners, still have the clicking as if still trying to ignite. At least have a few clues now as to what could be wrong and can go from there, rather than being totally thick! :-[
Thanks all, this is such a great site for help. :D
  • Do you have to press a button to light the gas, or does it light automatically when you turn burner knob?
Our cooker has the button for the rings and grease build-up tends to make the button sticky and not release fully, so clicks away merrily until pulled out physically all the way or is cleaned.

The oven has the latter which gets the flames to heat up a thermostat type device which tells the control that the flame is lit and stops the clicking. Sometimes when the gas switches to high the flames shoot past the sensor and the ignition starts annoyingly clicking again, thinking the flame has gone out. We have to turn the flame down for a while to really heat up the sensor before we can turn up the flame.

You may be able to pinpoint the problem by experimenting.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks SCat for that - mine is the automatic type for burners, grill and oven. But clicking is only when burners are on. Grill and oven just fine (at the moment, fingers crossed!)
  • My old Zanuzzi gas hob used to 'click' but I am sure it was caused by a build up of grease. Try to wipe the automatic ignition switch as clean as possible.
