Fastest camera out there!

Can someone recommend a digital camera? What I'm after is not the highest quality in the world, but (without compromising quality too much) the ability to go from "ooh look at that interesting insect/antelope/celebrity on a bike" to a photo in just a few seconds. My current camera is an 'old' Olympus Camedia which at 3MP still takes pretty good snaps, but is soooooo slow. Was so annoyed when I was up in Scotland recently and missed a pic of a golden eagle before it flew off!
So... anyone got the fastest snapper out there?

The shutter delay is part of the problem as the camera works out the exposure and focus for the shot. All cameras will have some delay. Best to check the camera reviews for shutter delay before you buy. I remember seeing one website which listed these but didnt take a note of it. Perhaps someone else can help out here.0 -
Thanks. Looks like this has got more complex as the two 'best' for shutter speeds have sever drawbacks (one being discontinued... and the other doesn't have an optical viewfinder - don't like that much.
Seems like a trip to Jessop's is in order.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

For negligible shutter lag you really need to go for an SLR. However there is a table here with timings:

Also check the reviews at https://www.dpreview.com as these include shutter lag timings.Charlie0 -
