buying genuine dvds online - what to look for?

Not sure which forum to post this on, please move if it is wrong.

Basically I am trying to buy a dvd for my son but am having no luck at the usual retailers and my only course of action seems to be buying it from sellers on ebay, play, amazon etc. but am put off by 'fake dvd' tales.

I have looked at the feedback of one seller who is listed at play and ebay and it is mainly positive (speedy delivery, item as described, well packed) but it doesn't actually say anything about the dvds themselves.

Is there any way of telling, especially before you buy, what things to look out for? And/or can anyone recommend ones they know are legit?

Thanks:)

I bought a DVD off an eBay seller with an endless list of +ve feedback and virtually no -ves at all. The DVD I received was obviously a pirated copy, however.

I reckon the chances are, if it's a DVD that's so rare that only eBay have copies... the chances are that they're dodgy.

If the DVD isn't being pressed any more, maybe it would be better to try to find a second-hand copy...?

Thanks for your quick reply, esuhl. That is what I am wondering too.

Am I allowed to mention the seller, to see if anyone on here has used them?

Maybe mention the film name in case anyone here has a copy on a shelf they don't watch?! You're right to be wary of fakes btw!

No don't give the sellers name just give the details of the dvd.

If the main stream dvd suppliers don't have it then it could be that the film/programme has not been released on dvd or it is a out of print dvd?
  • I was after a genuine copy of 'Beauty and the Beast' for my wife for years but all you could ever get on ebay were shonky copies. Luckily for me Disney finally released again so I could buy a genuine copy.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • There's nothing to stop you dropping a line to the seller and asking if it's genuine or copied.

Alternatively, the Amazon marketplace is relatively pirate-free.

You can't ask someone you don't know if they're a criminal and expect to get a straight answer...
