Deferring Uni Place

Options
Junior's Plan A is to go into the RN with a Plan B being going to Uni in October 2011.

However he learnt yesterday that the particular trade that he wants to go into isn't even processing applications until Jan 2012 at the earliest, which kinda throws a spanner into both plans.

Batting ideas around has come up with a potential Plan C of him deferring his Uni place until October 2012 which wouldn't have any tution fee implications as we live in Wales.

So, if he decided to run with plan C (which would allow him to proceed with RN application and if that fails he could go to Uni a year later than if he'd gone straight from sixth form, how would he do it - would he have to withdraw his application for this year and reapply for next ?

Also can anyone see a flaw that we haven't?

He can wait until he gets offers then request a deferral. That means he's guarnteed a place in 2012 providing he meets the criteria for the offer and the university allows the deferral. Has he considered going to university to do something related to what he wants to do with the RN and join the Officer Training Corps for the RN at his university. That way he gets his degreine in case the RN doesn't work out and has the chance of fast tracking his application to the RN because he'll have spent three years working with them, doing training and getting paid for it?

I appreciate that this isn't what you're asking but has he looked at degree level entry into the Navy and/or the various bursary schemes that are available whilst studying?

  • thanks guys for the replies.

As far as what he wants to do in the RN, he can do it straight after 6th form although if he went in after Uni (I think) he would enter with a slightly higher rank.

Its hard to know what to advise him.....Uni was always plan B although I appreciate that he might not have got in and that if he does get a degree it will be something that he will always have.

Another option would be to accept his uni place for 2011 and if his plans remain unchanged re the RN, he could contact Admissions at his chosen uni after results day and ask to defer till 2012. They don't tend to ask for a reason but taking a year out to experience the world is not seen to be a bad thing. This would give him some breathing space to see what happens with RN but keep his place open for 2012 in the meantime. Also means he doesn't have to reapply for 2012.
My son did a similar thing this year, he applied for a uni place for 2010 as wanted to start a years work placement immediately on finishing his A levels, but 2 months down the line was having doubts about his chosen uni course. He then opted to defer for a year to give himself thinking time. May not be seen to be the done thing but this paid off as the uni accepted him deferring for a year 'whilst he made up his mind'9 although he didn't tell them he was having 2nd thoughts)
As it turned out he DID decide he was going down the wrong route and ended up cancelling his deferred place and reapplying for 2011 to do a totally different course at a differnet Uni! Meant he had to start the application process all over again with a new personal statement but now he's sure he's made the right decision and starts his degree this September (fingers crossed).
I hope you have followed this, I've reworded it several times now.

The only problem with this plan is the difference in the course fees between entry in 2011 and 2012, even for someone who's deferred entry for a year.

Yes I agree. But according to Mountain of debt, tuition fees aren't affected in Wales. Presumably son is considering welsh unis only?
