VAG-COM info

After some advice from any vag com users, basically i have one of them cheapo leads off fleabay that i am struggling to get working.

It worked fine on my laptop 6 months ago connecting to a 2004 passat tdi, since then i have had to restore the lappy and reload the vag com 409.1.When i open vag com i can do a test on interface and it finds ok with excellent latentcy, but whenever i connect to the car it does not communicate with the control unit no matter what system i try.
I thought it could be a faulty interface so tried a new one still the same fault.
lappy is running 32bit windows7 home premium if that makes a difference?

You need to check in device manage what the COM port number of the deviceis. Windows keeps allocation COM ports at ever higher numbers (my interface installed on COM21).

Once I moved it to COM3 it started to communicate.

409.1 is the old shareware version. I take it your using a cheapo ebay knock off cable then ?

If so good luck, they are renounded for being completely hit or miss.

Check out https://www.ross-tech.com for a proper cable and the latest software.

    You've got 2 options really:

    1. Uninstall 409.1 and download VCDS-Lite from RossTech (this is the new name for VAGCOM).

    2. Stick with 409.1, but try running it in compatability mode for XP.

Personally, I would get rid of 409.1 as it's very temperamental with Windows 7/Vista. VCDS-Lite is fully compatible and much more stable.

If you're anywhere near Northants, you're more than welcome to pop over and hook my laptop up to your car.

None of Ross Tech's software is shareware.

You can download limited versions of their software from their website for free, but to get the full version you need to pay $99 (if you've got a 3rd party interface).

If you buy one of their genuine interfaces for $300 plus then that includes the full software and activation.

There are plenty of ebay leads out there that will work. It's normally Windows 7/Vista not liking the older versions of vagcom that's the problem.

I know, I've had the full ross-tech hex-can interface for the last 5 years. When 409.1 came out it was classed as shareware by developer. Since the rise of knock off interfaces this term was removed.

Thats completely untrue. I've been in the (outside of my day job) retro-fit business for a long time and it's never the software that causes problems. Check out any decent VAG forum.

It is completely true. Only the latest VCDS is compatible with Windows Vista/7.

Most problems stem from people trying to use the older versions of vagcom (which there are a lot of hacked copies floating on the internet) with the latest versions of Windows. I'm not for one instance suggesting the person who started the thread is using a dodgy copy by the way.

Yes there are some cheap and cheerful leads on ebay that don't do the job, but there are some that work fine.

I currently own a genuine full copy of VCDS plus a RossTech lead, but have used 3rd party leads off ebay in the past too.
  • bet you a tenner that you havent given permision for windows for you to use your software as an administrator.

windows 7 and even worse culprit vista gives you BASIC rights over all software you install on a certain windows account.

right click, properties, security, your system account should have all bar special permissions ticked and the same for administrators acount, if you account (the name you log on with) has very few ticks you need tio change those, by going into edit and ticking the relevant boxes and then apply them and then clse and restart (as some changes dont come into affect untill you do restart. while your in properties if you go to copatability, you can select it to run in a compatible to you liking from enebling run this program in compatability mode for: and in the drop down select windows XP service pack 3.
