iTunes/Mac/iPhone problem

I dropped my iPhone and cracked the screen. Today the Apple Store replaced it for me but I need to restore all my data onto the new phone by syncing it with iTunes. I backed up before the Apple Store replaced the phone so all my personal data should be stored on iTunes.

My problem now is that the iTunes version on my Mac is version 9.1 and when I connect the new phone it says the phone requires iTunes version 10 or higher. When I check for software updates on iTunes it says the latest version is 10.1.2 and to download it. I've already downloaded it once via iTunes itself and, a second time, via the iTunes website. For some reason, however, iTunes hasn't updated from being version 9.1.

I've restarted my Macbook several times now but it still shows up as version 9.1 when I go into iTunes.

Anyone know how I can get around this without losing the backup of my old iPhone?

You do know you have to run the iTunes installer after you download it, right?

    Yes. ;)

I've done everything but it still hasn't updated from version 9.1.

The current version of iTunes requires OSX version 10.5 (Leopard) as a minimum system requirement. I'm guessing you are on an older version?

Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner then select "About this Mac" and in the window that opens it'll say Mac OS X and the version number below it.

    OK, it's not that then.

What happens when you run the iTunes 10 installer? Do you get an error message, does nothing happen at all, or does it seem to be installing normally?

You might want to try uninstalling iTunes 9 (quit iTunes and then drag the icon from the Dock to the trash) and then running the iTunes 10 installer. Your songs/app library shouldn't be affected. Full instructions here:

I attempted to download the 10.1.2 version through iTunes itself using the 'Check for Updates' facility. It appeared to download it along with a load of other updates for my Mac. When I went into iTunes again it was still showing as version 9.1. Restarted the Mac after that but still 9.1 showing. Got a message when I clicked on 'Check for Updates' again that said 10.1.2 was available to download. Tried again, this time it said that there was no update available to download.

Tried downloading 10.1.2 direct from the iTunes site. That didn't solve it either.

Have booked an appointment in the Apple Store for tomorrow to see if they can solve it. I'm reluctant to uninstall or delete things in case I lose the backup for my phone.

    Thanks for your help. :)
