Absolutely the cheapest is to go into a shop and buy a local PAYG SIM card. There are lots of shops for each of the local mobile operators.
Most mobile operators have a standard rate and a very cheap rate of their own. The cheap rate uses a prefix and gives a slightly lower quality signal. Calls home to the UK are no more than a penny or 2 per minute as long as you use the low rate access code and call evening or w/e HK time, which usually works out well with the time difference.
Have a look at

and look for rechargeable SIM cards. There are always offers on of bonus credit etc.
Rates per min to the UK for fixed line peak / fixed line off-peak / mobile peak / mobile off-peak using the 1968 cheap call service on "3" in HK$ (over HK$ 14.5 to the £ currently)

Great Stuff...
What about calling from hotel phones? When we get to HK we will be in hotel for a month.
Are there any calling cards we can use? or charge cards?Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
I recently found a service that allows you to place free phone-to-phone calls over the internet. Between members (in following countries) the calls are absolutely free.
USA, Canada, China, Singapore, Hong Kong
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malaysia,
Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal,
Russia, San Marino, South Korea, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, Venezuela
I have registered my three telephone numbers. My dad in South America has registered his numbers as well. I can now speak to him for 60 minutes each day - free.
I simply go to the website (even can do it from a mobile) and select the two numbers I want to connect. My own phone rings - and once I pick it up the other number rings and voila !

Most hotel calls are incredibly expensive and that includes calling card calls unless you can persuade them to throw them in free. Lots of calling cards for sale all around esp the shops around the Kowloon end of the Star Ferry.0 -
