Amazon.co.uk pricing!!

Options
I saw a Kipling suitcase that I wanted on amazon.co.uk - £58 ish, RRP £140 - great I thought! I'll buy one and if its what I want when it arrives, I'll buy another so that I have the matching set.

The case arrives, it's gorgeous and I go online to order another to find the price now for the identical item is £100.99!!!! !!!!!!?!!

Why?! Is this what happens on Amazon? Now I can't afford the matching set...

Yes, this frequently happens on Amazon.

I think they use supply and demand software that puts the price up if there is a demand on the product. You could keep an eye on the price because it may well go back down again.
  • Could I have inadvertently pushed the price up by visiting the product lots of times before I decided to go for it and invest in new luggage? Or is it jus twhen its actually sold??

Probably not. But if like me when I have been looking at certain areas of the Amazon website I often get email from them saying something like "As someone who has browsed the Baby Store at Amazon.co.uk" so they do monitor what you are looking at if logged in.

thanks for asking the question OP - i'm annoyed with Amazon for the same reason... except i waited till payday to buy a watch and now its jumped hugely!! Martin's main amazon page recomends Camel Camel to see what prices have been, but shame it doesnt predict them! http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/

Amazon prices can fluctuate daily - you can check the selling prices of items on Amazon on this site http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/

I've sometimes noticed that if I buy an item, then immediately return to that same item, the price has changed. I'm sure there's some clever algorithm at work which adapts the price according to the level of purchases etc.

As for camelcamelcamel, it never seems to work properly for me. I've set up alerts so that it will send me an email when the price of an item I'm interested in drops, when the email arrives I follow the link to Amazon and discover that the price on Amazon never bears any resemblance to the price mentioned in the email.

It depends on how many people are viewing the product. You can keep tabs on the popularity of an item - which pages are ranking higher for views than others. Supply and demand will push something up. We have the software for our website. Needless to say however, we're not profiteering from the software though, it helps to show which pages are ranking well and which need optimising on ours.

Was the item being sold by Amazon themselves, or was it via a seller?

Best thing to do is put something you like in your basket (even in the save for later section), that way, whenever you sign in and look in your basket it will tell you how much the price has increased/decreased. I find this useful when I want to buy say a few books, I currently have about 25 on my reading list and they are all in my basket, when I come to order I'll know which ones have recently gone down and which ones have been going up, so that I can order the recently reduced ones and hold out on the price risers.

There was a home cinema system I almost ordered about a week ago for £299 but thought I'd wait until I'd been paid, it's now £150 more expensive!! So have put it in the basket to be alerted when the price drops again - just not sure if it will drop that much.

I know, it's very annoying though!

I've found this site !!!!!!!!!!!!!! useful for notification of price drops - you can select your price point and receive an emai when an item is on sale for that price.

Hmm - don't know why it did that!
